About Us

Chestnut Creek School of the Arts (CCSA) is a year-round art school that believes that art is for everyone and everyone is an artist. Programming includes heritage and contemporary art and traditional music. Classes are offered in Appalachian music and dance, drawing & painting, weaving, basket-weaving, felting, sewing, dyeing, jewelry, pottery, wood  and stone carving, and more. Classes are offered for adults, teens, and children.

Our Mission

CCSA preserves and promote the cultural heritage of southwest Virginia by offering classes and event year-round for all ages and skill levels in traditional music, heritage crafts, and contemporary arts.

Classes are tailored to suit both area residents within an easy driving distance as well as visitors.

Our Vision

CCSA Enriches the lives of individual through skilled teaching. All are welcome, from beginner to master artists and musicians as well as the curious observer.

CCSA offers a learning environment that is stimulating, beautiful, and peaceful, giving students the resources and time to create new work and hone skills.

It is a place where people are encouraged to work and discover, experiment and refine.

Our Goals

By providing an environment conducive to learning, CCSA communicates the value of art and traditional music, improves art education, encourages cultural enrichment and creativity, and promotes economic development.

CCSA offers weekend workshops for the local, regional, and national markets, and evening and daytime classes for those within an easy driving distance.


CCSA Main Campus

ChCCSA Bank Buildingestnut Creek School of the Arts is located in the beautiful historic National Bank Building on the corner of Main and Grayson Streets in downtown Galax. The lobby is a gift store and event space, and also houses The Dixon Art Vault, where many of the gift items are located. Classrooms include a jewelry studio, weaving studio, music room, fiber room, painting room (with a sink), 2 multi-purpose classrooms/meeting rooms.

Old Town Pottery

 

OTP has Open Studio Hours, when the public can come to the studio and use the facility with hands-on assistance for a small fee of $5.00 per visit, and $2.00 per pound of clay used. OTP Open Studio Hours are:

- Thursday, 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm
- Wednesday and Friday, 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

OTP also offers co-op memberships. Co-op members have full access to the studio and all of its equipment for a monthly fee.
